My name is Yuliya, and I’m a lifelong artist. I developed the technical skills in my high school art classes and have been building upon them ever since! I am first and foremost a portrait artist. I’ve been drawing portraits of human beings in every life stage, as well as their beloved pets, for over a decade. I was a graphite and colored pencil-only artist, but have expanded my mediums to include coffee, watercolor, and acrylic. I don’t know if I will ever develop a unique style or color palette. Each art piece is usually completely different from its predecessors as my ideas evolve daily and I’m inspired and influenced by artists worldwide.
I am drawn to oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) through my identification of the artistic elements in the profession. I’ve devoted a considerable aspect of my life to studying and recreating the proportion, contour, and the composition of the human face. Through my studies in anatomy and performance of surgical procedures, I have started to map the face below the surface. I made connections between the various planes and am developing a precise, three-dimensional understanding of the human form. My experiences have not only aided my abilities to replicate facial features on paper but have increased my familiarity with the strategies behind facial surgery.
OMFS is not a well-known specialty to the public; I thus made it a goal in residency to document my experiences through representative artworks. I paint common surgeries in our field, as well as summative pieces from all my medical school rotations and my general surgery years. It’s a visual diary of sorts.
