Anna Kobzeva-Herzog, MD is a general surgery resident at Boston Medical Center. She was born and raised in Southern California, but moved to the east coast for college. She received a B.S. in Human Physiology and a minor in Dance from Boston University and then attended Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine.
Growing up, she dreamed of being a professional ballet dancer. Under the direction of Glenda Carhart at Riverside Ballet Arts in Riverside, CA, she pursued her ballet training at the pre-professional level and performed with professional companies including California Riverside Ballet (CRB) and Ballet Resource Active Volunteer Association (BRAVA). Her repertory included featured roles in The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. She attended competitive summer training programs at The School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Boston Ballet. She later trained at the pre-professional level at Boston Ballet.
In medical school, she continued to dance professionally with Dance Visions, Inc. led by Margot Parsons. As a resident, she continues ballet as a hobby and takes open ballet classes throughout Boston. She notes that operating is similar to dancing. Your surgical skills are like ballet steps and positions that you work to perfect each time you are under those bright operating lights. Because of this, it seems fitting that some parts of the world refer to the operating room as the operating theatre.
